Assistance for single mothers

on September 3, 2013

Being a single mother can be very difficult. Single moms are not only responsible for the care of their children, but they have to financially support their family as well. There is assistance for single mothers available. Here is more information on financial and housing help for single mothers.

It can be hard for single mothers to keep up with the basic monthly bills. There are programs that can help provide them financial assistance. WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) is one such program.  It provides free additional food, healthcare referrals and nutrition instruction. It serves women that are pregnant, breastfeeding and postnatal. Infants are also eligible. Children under the age of 5 can also participate if they are found to be undernourished by a separate healthcare professional.

A stable housing situation is very important for a family, particularly a family with children. Housing vouchers can help cover the cost of rent. How they work is mothers get to select a house or home and must pay about 30% of their income in rent. The government will pay the rest, up to a certain predefined payment standard. One of the benefits of this program is that it lets people who participate choose where they want to live.

Single mothers have a lot of responsibilities to juggle. They must care for their families and pay the bills. Programs like WIC and housing vouchers can provide some assistance for single mothers and hopefully make life a little easier.
